Department of Sport and Sport Science
The Institute for Sport and Sport Science (IfSS) belongs to Faculty 16 "Arts and Sport Science" of the TU Dortmund University and is a medium-sized institute. It is divided into six Research Groups, two of which are anchored in the natural sciences (Research Group 1 & 2) and four in the social sciences (Research Group. 3 - 6).

Research Group 2: Training and Movement (Training and Movement Science)
Research Group 3: School and Teaching (Sports Didactics)
Research Group 4: Education and 'Bildung' (Sports Pedagogy)
Research Group 5: Development and Learning (Sports Psychology)
Research Group 6: Culture and Society (Sports Sociology)
The department stands for qualified sports teacher training and profiled school sports research.
In teaching, only teacher training courses are offered. Dortmund is one of the few locations in North Rhine-Westphalia where all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in physical education are offered:
- "Teacher training at Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen" (GyGe).
- "Teacher training at Berufskollegs" (BK)
- "Teacher training at Haupt-, Real-, Sekundar- and Gesamtschulen" (HRGe)
- "Teacher training at Grundschulen" (G) with sport as an in-depth teaching subject
- "Teacher training at Grundschulen" (G)
- "Teacher training for sonderpädagogische Förderung" (SF)
Currently, about 1000 students are enrolled in the program of physical education.
