Master of Science in “Data Science in Sports and Health”

Overview

The English-language Master program of Data Science in Sports and Health is an expertly designed study program hosted by the Institute for Sports and Sport Science. This multidisciplinary program offers a comprehensive education that integrates data science with principles from sports medicine, health sciences, as well as training and movement sciences – both in theory and practice. Key aspects of the study program include developing interdisciplinary communication skills, proficiency in data analysis, and scientific expertise at the intersection of data science, sports, and health.

The regular duration of study is four semesters, with admissions taking place every winter semester. Students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in sport sciences, health sciences, statistics, mathematics, computer sciences, biomedical engineering, or other closely related fields are eligible to apply for this program.

Structure of study program

The curriculum comprises various subject-specific modules organized around three core areas: "Data Science," "Sports Medicine/Health Sciences," and "Training and Movement Science." These modules are distributed over four semesters to align with the typical workflow in data science—from data acquisition to modeling, knowledge discovery, and effective communication.

Methods and technologies for acquisition of data in sports and health are introduced in three modules. Hands-on training in these modules allow students to collect high-quality research data using state-of-the-art technologies employed in sports medicine, health research, as well as training and movement science. Core principles and models from sports medicine and training and movement science are covered in subject-specific modules. Modules dedicated to data science provide a concise theoretical and hands-on training in statistical inference, machine learning, and advanced statistical learning—particularly for large-scale and complex datasets within the context of sports and health.

Throughout the program, competencies in data science are combined with domain-specific knowledge in sports and health through interest-driven research projects conducted individually or collaboratively in groups. An internship and the Master’s thesis further provide the possibility to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills in real-world settings.

Career Prospects

This Master’s program offers students the opportunity to gain proficiency in the theoretical foundations and concepts of data science, with a particular focus on applications within sports and health sciences. Upon completion of the study program, students can independently, effectively, and creatively work on scientific quantitative research questions and projects related to sports and health, plan and design the corresponding acquisition of data, and apply or develop state-of-the-art data analysis methodologies.

The combination of data science, sports, and health with an emphasis on largescale data provides an attractive profile for careers both within and outside academia. Professional career opportunities include roles, for example, in the sports/medical/health industry, academia, private medical and health services, as well as positions in the public sector (e.g., insurance companies), and sports institutions. For qualified students, the program opens up the possibility for doctoral studies afterwards.

The English-language program prepares students for an international professional career. The program offers international students a unique opportunity to join a multidisciplinary academic community and gain a foothold in Germany.
