About the person

Research focus:

I am currently involved in two different research areas. In my first research focus, I am investigating the influence of high-intensity endurance training on immunological and physiological endpoints in people with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) (ECHO study). Specifically, I am investigating the change in neutrophil immune cell populations in response to a twelve-week exercise intervention in these patients. By analyzing the underlying systemic pathophysiological-immunological processes, the results obtained can specify the current EULAR exercise recommendations as a non-drug therapy option for axSpA patients.

In my second research focus, I am investigating the effects of a multimodal exercise program on the kynurenine pathway (KP) and its metabolites in patients with metastatic breast cancer. The basis for this is the EFFECT study, which was conducted at 8 international sites until 2023. In particular, I am focusing on the effects of a six-month training intervention on the gene expression of various KP enzymes. The results obtained are intended to close a well-described gap between patient-oriented research and the underlying physiological mechanisms.
