First steps into physical education

Step 1

Orientation and information

Decisions about the course of study, the combination of subjects, the place of study and the financing of the study program have to be made before the start of the study program. All decisions are closely linked and should be prepared through discussions with parents, peers, teachers and experts. The following sources of information and contact persons can also be used:

  • Homepages of the universities and subjects or faculties.
  • Participation in information events of the universities and faculties especially for prospective students
  • Internships at the universities or in the intended subject during high school
  • Participation in taster events of the subjects of a university
  • Consultations with representatives of the general student advisory service of the university
  • Consultations with advisors and representatives of the student councils

You can find the contact persons for student advising in Physical Education here.

In addition, there is the possibility of using self-exploration procedures in the search for one's own professional interests and strengths. The following procedures are particularly suitable for reviewing the decision for or against taking up a teaching degree program:

  • The test procedure "Career Counselling for Teachers" (CCT) contains various self-exploration questionnaires for different addressees (prospective students, students, teachers) in so-called "guided tours" on personal interests, previous pedagogical experience or career-relevant personality traits. It is used, for example, by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the aptitude test for teacher training programs (see Step 2).
  • The "Fit for the Teaching Profession?!" procedure as part of the "Potsdam Teacher Stress Studies" is intended to enable a comparison between the demands of the teaching profession and the test person's personal competencies and characteristics for dealing with these demands. It includes questionnaires for self-assessment and for assessment by another person.
Step 2

Aptitude test in the subject of sport

The prerequisite for enrollment in the subject of sports is, in addition to the general university entrance qualification, the successfully passed aptitude test in the subject of sports. The qualifying examination at TU Dortmund University takes place once a year, usually in June. It must be passed in the following disciplines:

  • Gymnastics,
  • athletics,
  • sports game (basketball, soccer or handball),
  • or small game.

For proof of qualification in swimming, the German Lifeguard Badge in Silver of the DLRG / DRK must be acquired privately and submitted with the registration for the aptitude test. To prepare for the qualifying examination, two training days are offered by the sports department during the summer semester. Further information on the registration procedure, performance requirements and contact persons can be found on the aptitude test page.

Step 3

Application and enrollment for the subject Sport

At TU Dortmund University, all teaching degree programs except for the teaching degree at vocational colleges are subject to limited admission, since the compulsory subject of educational science is subject to a local NC. An application for this is required by 15.07. via the student office of the TU Dortmund University (see under Application and Enrollment). For the teaching profession at vocational colleges, you can enroll until 30.09. if you do not want to study a subject that has a local NC (see also: Dates and Deadlines).

Improvement of the qualification for a university study by passing the aptitude test in the subject sport After passing the aptitude test and against the proof of the special course-related aptitude for the study in the teacher training courses sport with the degree Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), applicants for the subject of physical education in a teaching degree program of the school types elementary school, special education and vocational college receive an improvement of the average grade of the university entrance qualification by the value 0.7 to a maximum of the average grade 1.0 for the teaching subject, the learning area, the vocational specialization or the special education specialization as well as the educational sciences required for the complete degree program combination. Applicants for the teaching subject Physical Education in a teacher training program leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree who wish to apply for an improvement of the average grade of the university entrance qualification by the value of 0.7 by providing proof of suitability to study Physical Education have until July 15, 2022 to do so. The necessary certificate of passing the aptitude test will be sent to all applicants who have passed the aptitude test in good time before this deadline. Applicants who wish to become teachers at Gymnasium/Gesamtschule or Haupt-, Real- or Gesamtschule will NOT receive NC bonuses if they have passed the aptitude test. In order to be eligible for the bonus, you must submit proof of suitability to study physical education with your application for a study place to the Student Secretariat of the TU Dortmund University by the application deadline of 15.07.2022 at the latest (see www.tu-dortmund.de/bewerbung and www.tu-dortmund.de/einschreibung). Please remember that you will only receive the proof of eligibility to study sport when the Institute of Sport has received all the documents required for this purpose. Note: This regulation does not apply to students of the TU Dortmund University who would like to change to the subject Sport AND are already enrolled in a teaching degree program.

After the application, a separate allocation procedure is carried out by sorting all applicants in a ranking list according to predefined criteria. If an admission in the subject Sport is granted, then the enrollment has to be carried out within the deadline stated in the admission notice. For this enrollment, proof of course-related aptitude for the bachelor's degree in sports (proof of having passed the aptitude test) must be submitted, among other things. However, since experience has shown that not all applicants accept the assigned study place, the available study places will be awarded in one or more backlog procedures and, if necessary, in lottery procedures. New enrollment deadlines will then result in each case.

Important notice:

The NC values are not determined before the procedure! They are the result of the competition between the applicants for the study places and are formed anew every year. For this reason, the results of past allocation procedures always have only limited predictive power. You can find the NC values from the last years here.

The portal and further information on online application and the allocation procedure for subjects with restricted admission as well as online enrollment for subjects with and without restricted admission at TU Dortmund University can be found here.
