Sport and Forced Migration in the Mass Media

Goals and contents

This project concerns the mass media discourse on the relationship between sport and refugees. This topic is examined against the background of Foucauldian theories and through a discourse analysis (Wodak & Meyer, 2001) of a catalogue of German newspaper articles related to this subject. This catalogue was created by aggregating all articles published between 2011 and 2018 in the four most sold German newspapers: Bild, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Die Welt and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. With the support of student assistants, I completed and refined this catalogue and categorised the over 2000 articles identified in groups based on their main topics. Among other goals, one of the leading focuses of the research aims at establishing whether the turning point of the press's mood between 2015 and 2016 (Georgiou & Zaborowski, 2017) also affects the rhetoric of news concerning sport and refugees.
